Business expansion demands multiple stores that could either be hosted from the same domain or different domains. Magento 2 readily provides a solution for multi-store owners looking to expand their business by opening multiple stores.

To reap the benefits of using Magento 2 feature to create multiple stores, here’s a quick guide which involves four steps namely, selecting the store domain, adding a new store, adding a store view (default) and setting up the store URL.

Step 1: Choosing the store domain

Determine whether the new store will be part of the existing domain or subdomain or completely a new domain. Choosing the same domain doesn’t require any changes, but for a subdomain or a new domain, you need to do the set up separately.

Step 2: Adding the new store

In your Magento admin panel, do the following:

  • Navigate to Stores -> Settings -> All Stores
  • Click Create Store
    • Choose the Website which is the new store’s parent site.
    • Choose Main Website if you got only one parent site.
    • Fill the Name column.
    • Choose the new store’s main menu in the Root Category
  • Click Save Store to finish the process of adding the new store.

Step 3: Adding a store view (default)

In your Magento admin panel, do the following:

  • Click ‘Create Store View’
    • Select the newly created store for Store.
    • Assign a Name for the store view.
    • Using lower characters, type the store view Code.
    • For Status field, choose ‘enabled’ as its value.
    • Choose the new store’s position to specify the Sort Order
  • Click Save Store to finish the process of adding the new store.

Step 4: Setting up the store URL

In the Magento admin panel, do the following:

  • Navigate to Stores -> Settings -> Configuration.
  • Go to General -> Web on the left-side panel.
  • Locate Store View on the upper-left corner and check the new store.
  • Click OK.
  • For configuration, under the Base URLs section, do the following:
    • Locate Use Website next to the Base URL field.
    • Specify the base URL for the new store.
  • If you need Secure Base URLs, open the section and set the secure URL manually.
  • Before exiting, click Save Config
